1 Getting Started with Canva
Opening Canva
- Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari, or Edge)
- Go to www.canva.com
- You should already be logged in with the school account
- If not logged in, click "Log in" and use your school credentials
Understanding the Homepage
When you open Canva, you'll see the Homepage (also called Dashboard).
What you'll see:
Left Sidebar Menu:
- (purple + button) - Start a new design
- - Return to this main page
- - Educational tools
- - Your folders and organization
- - Browse all templates
- - School branding elements
- - AI-powered tools
Center Area:
- Search bar at the top
- Category icons (Education, Presentation, Social media, etc.)
- Your recent designs below
2 Creating Your First Design
Method 1: Using the Create Button
- Click the purple button in the top left
- A menu will appear with many options
You'll see:
- Search bar - Type what you want to create
- Quick actions - Tools like Magic Write, Brand Kit
- Create new - Popular design sizes
- Categories - Education, Presentations, Social media, etc.

3 Working with Templates
Templates are pre-designed layouts that you can customize. This is the EASIEST way to create professional designs!
Finding Templates
- Click in the left sidebar, or use the link above
- You'll see the Templates page with categories
Education-Specific Template Links
Using a Template
- Click on a template you like
- A preview will open
- Click the purple button
- The template opens in the editor - now you can change everything!
4 Understanding the Editor
When you open a design, you enter the Editor. This is where you make all your changes.
Editor Layout
Top Toolbar:
- - Save, make a copy, see version history
- - Change your design size (Magic Resize)
- - Switch between editing modes
- Undo/Redo arrows - Fix mistakes
- button (top right) - Download and share
Left Sidebar Tools:
- Design - Page templates and layouts
- Elements - Shapes, graphics, photos, videos
- Text - Add text boxes
- Brand - Your school's brand elements
- Uploads - Your own images
- Tools - Additional features
- Projects - Your saved designs
- Apps - Extra features and integrations
Center Canvas:
This is your design! Click on anything to select and edit it.
5 Adding and Editing Elements
Elements are the building blocks of your design: shapes, icons, photos, graphics, and more.
Opening the Elements Panel
- Click in the left sidebar
- You'll see categories:
- Shapes - Circles, squares, lines
- Graphics - Icons, illustrations, stickers
- Photos - Stock images
- Videos - Video clips
- Audio - Music and sound effects
Adding an Element
- Browse or search for what you need
- Click on any element to add it to your design
- It appears on your canvas
Editing an Element
| Action | How to do it |

| Move | Click and drag the element |
| Resize | Click the element, then drag the corner circles |
| Rotate | Click the element, hover near a corner until you see the rotation icon, then drag |
| Delete | Click the element, then press Delete key or click trash icon |
6 Working with Text
Adding Text
- Click in the left sidebar
- You'll see options:
- Add a text box - Creates an empty text box
- Add a heading - Large text
- Add a subheading - Medium text
- Add body text - Smaller text
- Click any option to add text to your design
Editing Text
- Double-click on any text to edit it
- Type your new text
- Click outside the text box when done
Formatting Text
When you click on text, a toolbar appears at the top with these options:
- Font name - Click to change the font
- Font size - Click to change the size (or use + and -)
- B - Bold
- I - Italic
- U - Underline
- A with color - Change text color
- Alignment - Left, center, right
7 Uploading Your Images
You can add your own photos and images to any design.
How to Upload
- Click in the left sidebar
- Click the purple button
- Select images from your computer
- Wait for upload to complete
- Your images appear in the Uploads panel
Using Your Uploaded Images
- Go to in the left sidebar
- Click on any image you've uploaded
- It adds to your design
- Resize and position as needed
8 Editing Photos
Canva has powerful photo editing tools built right in.
Quick Access to Photo Tools
Editing a Photo in Your Design
- Click on any photo in your design
- Click in the top toolbar (or double-click the image)
- Use the editing tools that appear
Key Photo Tools
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Background Remover | Automatically removes the background from photos. Great for placing people/objects on new backgrounds! |
| Magic Eraser | Remove unwanted objects from photos. Just brush over what you want to remove. |
| Adjustments | Brightness, contrast, saturation, filters and effects |
| Crop | Cut out parts of an image or change its shape |
| Flip | Mirror an image horizontally or vertically |
9 Editing AI-Generated Images (NotebookLM)
Special Workflow: Editing Images from NotebookLM or Other AI Tools
If you've created an image using NotebookLM, ChatGPT, or another AI tool, here's how to polish it in Canva:
Step 1: Save the AI Image
- Right-click on the AI-generated image
- Select "Save image as..." or "Download"
- Save it to your computer (remember where you saved it!)
Step 2: Upload to Canva
- Go to Canva
- Click â choose a size (or "Custom size" to match your image)
- Click in the left sidebar
- Click and select your AI image
- Drag the uploaded image onto your canvas
Step 3: Enhance the AI Image
Now you can improve it! Here's what you might want to do:

| Add School Logo | Upload your logo â drag it onto the design |
| Add Elements | Click â add shapes, icons, decorations |
| Crop the Image | Double-click the image â drag the corners to crop |

| Resize for Different Uses | Click â choose poster, social media, etc. |

10 Resizing Your Designs

How to Resize
- Click in the top toolbar
- You'll see options:
- Suggested sizes - Based on your design
- Custom size - Enter exact dimensions
- Categories - Social media, Print, Presentations
