Embedding Formative Assessment – The ISH Way

This course supports all new teachers at ISH in embedding formative assessment strategies into their everyday classroom practice. Participants will explore our shared approach to formative assessment at ISH, engage with resources on the Formative Assessment @ ISH Portal, and plan and teach a lesson using one or more of the five key strategies of formative assessment.

Format

⏳ Approx. 1.5-2 hours/week over roughly 5 weeks (asynchronous) – via ISH Academy

🀝 Final face-to-face session

Who should attend?

  • Compulsory: All new teachers at ISH with annual contracts, including those who joined mid-year last year. (They will be informed directly.)
  • Optional: Other teachers who are interested may also join, depending on available places.

Two course windows

In response to your input last year and recognising that some new colleagues feel overwhelmed, we will run the course in two different windows:

  • Autumn window: Flexible start (from 29th September to 6th October), with a final face-to-face session on 19 November.
  • Spring window: Estimated start in February 2026 (exact dates TBC).

πŸ‘₯ Optional: Participants may also book one (or more) 15-minute 1:1 appointment(s) with the course facilitator – Silvia Semana – at any point during the course to ask questions, explore ideas, or get personalised support.

Note: This course is compulsory for all new teachers at ISH. This course is free of charge for all participants.

Main Goals

  • Use the Formative Assessment @ ISH Portal confidently as a professional learning resource
  • Apply ISH’s shared understanding and language of formative assessment in own teaching practice

Types of learning activities

Throughout the course, participants will engage in a range of purposeful, practical activities, including:

  • Guided explorations of the Formative Assessment @ ISH Portal
  • Scavenger hunts and self-assessment check-ins
  • Reflective discussions with peers via forums
  • Strategy-focused planning using structured guiding questions
  • Peer review of formative assessment plans
